LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team committed five errors, which led to five unearned runs, and second-ranked SUNY Cortland defeated the Generals, 8-3, at Cap'n Dick Smith Field on Thursday.
The Red Dragons (11-2) scored the first three runs of the contest in the top of the second. The rally started with a slow chopper to third that junior first baseman Patrick Schetter beat out the throw for a single. Junior catcher Justin Teague followed with a grounder to third, but senior third baseball Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) bobbled the ball and both runners were safe on the error.
Junior designated hitter Jack Massa laid down a sacrifice bunt, but senior starting pitcher Anderson Baldy's (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) throw sailed high to first to allow Massa to reach base safely. Schetter came home on the play to put Cortland up 1-0. Junior left fielder Nate Budge then hit an RBI single into the hole between third and short, and the Red Dragons' notched their final run (3-0) of the inning while grounding into a double play.
The Generals (10-6) answered with two runs in the bottom of the second. Weston singled to second to start the frame, and then first-year right fielder Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) blooped a single into right center to put runners on first and second. Both runners moved up one base on a wild pitch. With one out, senior catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md./St. Johns College) lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring Weston home. Monson advanced to third on the play, and then came home (3-2) on an errant throw by the catcher.
Cortland added two more runs in the third with the benefit of another W&L error. The Red Dragons loaded the bases on two walks and an error, and scored on a ground out and a single by Teague.
The Red Dragons pushed the lead to 6-2 on an RBI single by senior third baseman Steven Figueroa in the top of the fifth, but the Blue and White cut the advantage to 6-3 on a one-run single by Weston in the bottom of the frame. W&L would get no closer, as Cortland added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth to reach the final margin.
The Generals had plenty of scoring opportunities in the contest but left eight runners on base. W&L went just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position, while the Red Dragons were 6-for-12.
Baldy (1-1) suffered the loss for the Blue and White, pitching 5.0 innings. He allowed six runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks. Sophomore Jake Casey (1-0) earned the victory for Cortland. He threw 4.0 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) and striking out seven.
Weston finished the day 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Monson and junior second baseman Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) each registered two hits.
The Generals return to ODAC play on Saturday, when they host Virginia Wesleyan for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm.
