DANVILLE, Va. — Senior catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md./St. Johns College) went 3-for-7 with three RBI and three runs scored to lead the Washington and Lee baseball team to a doubleheader split at Averett on Saturday in the season-openers for both teams.
The Cougars (1-1) scored eight runs to take game one, 8-5, and then the Generals (1-1) used three RBI from Paton to win the second contest, 6-3.
The Blue and White tallied three runs in the first inning to grab an early advantage in game two. With runners on first and third and one out, senior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to put W&L on the board, 1-0.
First-year center fielder Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) stole second to get into scoring position, and Paton brought him home with a RBI single up the middle. Paton would end up scoring later in the frame on an error to extend the lead to 3-0.
Averett answered in the bottom of the second with three runs to tie the game. Sophomore catcher Tyler Fetherolf drew a bases-loaded walk off of sophomore starter Tyler Murphy (Chesapeake, Va./Greenbrier Christian Academy) to plate the first run. A balk brought the second run home, and then a RBI groundout from junior center fielder Dallas Smithers tied the score, 3-3.
The game was still tied in the top of the sixth, but junior left fielder Robey Smalley (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy) broke the tie, 4-3, with a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Paton.
The Generals added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by Paton. With one out and runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh, senior pitcher Anderson Baldy (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) came on in relief, and recorded the final two outs to notch his first collegiate save and preserve the victory.

Trailing 5-2 in the top of the fourth, junior designated hitter Paul Diven (Sparrows Point, Md./Archbishop Spalding) launched a three-run homer to left to tie the game, 5-5.
Averett went back in front in the fifth. AU drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks to take a 7-5 lead. Sophomore left fielder A.J. Hart gave the team an insurance run in the sixth on a RBI single to center.
