Virginia Wesleyan Sweeps W&L Baseball in ODAC Doubleheader

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team gave up a combined 22 runs, as Virginia Wesleyan swept a doubleheader over the Generals on Sunday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

Junior pitcher Sean Greiser (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam) stymied the W&L (6-13, 4-11 ODAC) offense to lead the Marlins (12-7, 11-3 ODAC) to an 8-1 victory in game one, and then VWC used a 10-run fourth inning to take game two, 14-4.

The Generals' lone run in the opening contest came on a throwing error in the eighth inning. The Marlins notched runs in five innings, including three in the top of the ninth to put the game away.

Senior designated hitter Josh Mason (Chesapeake, Va./Bishop Sullivan Catholic) led VWC in game one, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBI. He hit a solo home run in the sixth, and had a two-run triple in the ninth.

Greiser (3-1) pitched 7.2 innings, allowing just one unearned run. He gave up three hits, while striking out seven. Senior Drew Shott (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) suffered the loss for W&L to fall to 2-4. He went 7.0 innings, and allowed four runs (two earned) on nine hits. He also had six strikeouts.

In the second game, the Generals were trailing 1-0, entering the bottom of the third, but a two-out RBI single by sophomore right fielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) tied the game (1-1).

The Marlins responded with 10 runs in the top of the fourth. During the inning, VWC recorded seven hits, and were helped by two W&L errors, a walk, a passed ball and a hit batter. Mason capped the inning with a three-run home run to deep left field to push the Marlins' lead to 11-1.

Each team would score three runs over the last five innings to reach the final margin. Senior Cory Smith (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) took the loss for the Generals and dropped to 0-1. He went 3.1 innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) on five hits.

Sophomore Riley Koonce (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) came on in relief to earn the victory to improve to 3-1. He tossed 2.2 innings. He allowed just one walk and no hits.

Over the course of the doubleheader, Mason went 5-for-8 with eight RBI, two home runs, three runs scored and a triple. Wasson and senior Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) each had three hits to lead W&L.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they host Eastern Mennonite at 4:00 pm.
