LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team had four pitchers combine to throw a one-hitter, and the offense totaled 13 runs on 17 hits en route to a 13-0 victory over Bridgewater on Wednesday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
W&L (6-5, 4-3 ODAC) held the Eagles (13-5-1, 4-5 ODAC) without a hit through 8.2 innings, but senior center fielder Darren Yoder (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) singled to center fielder on a full count with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to break up the combined no hitter. Senior Drew Shott (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) earned the victory for the Generals to improve to 2-1. He threw 4.0 innings of relief, striking out one batter.
W&L busted the game open in the bottom of the third inning with six runs. Already holding a 1-0 lead, junior center fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) began the frame by reaching on an error. After a fly out, Myer stole second. Senior shortstop Taylor Rowe (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) then singled up the middle to plate Myer and give W&L a 2-0 lead.
Junior designated hitter Riley Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) followed with an infield single. After another fly out, sophomore third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) singled through the left side to plate Rowe. The run forced the Bridgewater's starter, first-year Chad Lenz (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox), from the contest.
Junior catcher Andrew Head (Edmond, Okla./Bishop McGuinness) kept the inning alive with a sharp one-run single to second base, which pushed the Generals' lead to 4-0. Sophomore first baseman Jonny Swenson (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) singled to third to load the bases, and then senior second baseman Nick Biumi (Cummings, Ga./Lambert) reached on an error by the shortstop.
Weston scored on the mishap to push the advantage to 5-0. In his second at bat of the inning, Myer lined the ball into left field to plate Swenson and Head, but Myer was thrown out at second trying to stretch the hit into a double to end the inning.
The Generals also scored four runs in the seventh to seal the victory. Head recorded a one-run double to left center, Myer had a bases loaded walk and first-year right fielder Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School) singled through the right side to score two runners.
Lenz took the loss for the Eagles to fall to 0-1. He allowed five runs (one earned) on five hits in 2.2 innings.
Weston (3-for-5) and Head (3-for-5) each led W&L with three hits. Weston had two RBI and three runs scored, while Head had three RBI and two runs scored. Myer also finished the game with three RBI.
The Generals next play Roanoke on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm.
