Weprinsky and Concklin Lead Generals to Sweep of Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team opened the 2015 season with a sweep of Marymount on Saturday at Barcroft Park at George Washington University.

The Generals (2-0) scored eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to earn a come from behind 11-8 victory in game one, and then sophomore pitcher Tom Concklin (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) gave up one hit in four innings as W&L won game two, 3-1.

Trailing 8-4 entering the top of the seventh of game one, senior outfielder Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) doubled to left to start the inning. Senior designated hitter Taylor Rowe (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) followed with a RBI single up the middle to trim the deficit to 8-5.

Following a strikeout, sophomore third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) doubled to left center to plate Rowe, and then advanced to third on an error. The Saints (0-2) changed pitchers, but sophomore outfielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) hit a RBI single to shortstop bring the Generals within two (8-6).

After another W&L strikeout, junior pinch hitter Michael DeMatteis (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) reached on an error, and then senior second baseman Nick Biumi (Cummings, Ga./Lambert) singled up the middle to load the bases.

Junior outfielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) walked to score Wasson (8-7), and then Weprinsky cleared the bases with a three-run triple to left center to give the Blue and White a 10-8 lead. Rowe singled home Weprinsky to cap the eight-run frame and push the W&L lead to 11-8.

Senior Cory Smith (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh to secure his first save of the year. It marked his seventh career save, which moved him into a tie for second on W&L's all-time list. Matt Reedy also totaled seven in his career. Jim Plantholt '10 holds the all-time record with nine.

Sophomore Anderson Baldy (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) recorded the final out of the sixth inning to notch his first career victory.

Sophomore Niko Sanchez pitched a third of an inning but suffered the loss. He gave up three unearned runs on two hits. Sophomore Ben Berczek started for Marymount, and gave up six earned runs in 6.1 innings.

In game two, Concklin threw 4.0 shutout innings, giving up just one hit and three walks, while striking out seven. Senior Andrew Lamb (Lexington, S.C./Hammond) pitched the final 3.0 innings, striking out four and giving up one earned run to earn the save.

W&L scored all three of its runs in the top of the second. Sophomore first baseman Jonny Swenson (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) hit a two-run triple to right center, and first-year second baseman Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) singled home Swenson to push the lead to 3-0. The Saints scored their only run on a RBI single by sophomore outfielder Brandon Savage.

First-year Collin Bazemore took the loss for Marymount, pitching 5.0 innings. He gave up three runs on four hits with four walks.

The Generals next compete on Wednesday, when they host Bluefield State at 3:00 pm.
