Offense Leads W&L Baseball to 17-10 Win at EMU
HARRISONBURG, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team scored nine combined runs in the first three innings, and held on for a 17-10 victory at Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday.
After scoring two runs in each of the first two innings, the Generals (13-7, 6-5 ODAC) extended the lead to 9-1 with a five-run third. Sophomore right fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) drew a one-out walk to start the rally. First-year first baseman Jonny Swenson (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) then reached on a throwing error by the third baseman, and Myer scored from first on the play.
Junior left fielder Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) brought Swenson home with a single to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a fly out, junior second baseman Nick Biumi (Cummings, Ga./Lambert) hit a RBI single to center to stretch the lead to 7-1, and moved to third on an error by the center fielder.
Biumi scored during the next at bat on a wild pitch. Senior center fielder Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) kept the inning alive with a double to center, and first-year third baseman Colton Campbell (Deatsville, Ala./Holtville) plated Dolan with a single down the left field line for the final run of the inning.
The Royals (14-14, 2-10 ODAC) responded in the in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs (9-4) on four hits. W&L pushed the lead to 10-4 in the fourth on a RBI single by Weprinsky, but then EMU notched three runs for the second consecutive inning.
Senior second baseman Ryan McAllister hit a RBI single through the left side, and senior designated hitter Jonathan Estrada doubled down the right field line to bring home two more Royals and bring the score to 10-7.
The Blue and White outscored Eastern Mennonite, 7-3, over the final five innings to reach the final margin of 17-10.
Senior Jake Rudolph (Cordova, Tenn./Memphis University School) started for the Generals, but failed to get out of the fifth inning. He pitched 4.1 innings, giving up eight earned runs on 12 hits.
Sophomore Kyle Tipping (Green Lane, Pa./The Hill School) came on in relief to earn the victory. He threw 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits to improve to 3-2 on the year. Junior Cory Smith (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) recorded his third save of the season, pitching the final 3.0 innings. He did not allow a run and scattered four hits, while striking out three.
Ryan Tierney (2-1) took the loss for the Royals. He pitched 1.0 inning, allowing four runs on five hits.
Weprinsky led the Generals' offense, finishing the day 3-for-5. He totaled four RBI and two runs scored. Biumi notched four hits in five at bats with two RBI and three runs scored. Dolan and sophomore catcher Riley Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) each added two RBI.
EMU led in hits, 20-18, but the Royals committed seven errors compared to three for the Generals. The Blue and White also scored a run in eight of the nine innings.
With his appearance, Rudolph increased his career total to 53, which is the second-most in W&L history. Peter Dean '04 holds the all-time record at 54 appearances.
The Generals host Bridgewater on Wednesday at 4:00 pm for their final game before the finals break.
