LEXINGTON, Va. — With its doubleheader sweep over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, the Washington and Lee baseball team qualified for the ODAC Tournament. W&L missed the playoffs in 2012, but has now advanced to the conference tournament in 12 of the last 13 years.
The fourth-seeded Generals finished the regular season 18-15 overall and 11-9 in the ODAC. The Blue and White will play the third-seed, Shenandoah, at 6:00 pm on Thursday at City Stadium in Lynchburg. The Hornets are 27-10 overall and 13-7 in league play.
The two teams played a doubleheader last Tuesday, April 23, in Winchester. SU won the first game 28-14, and came from behind for a 15-14 victory in game two.
The Generals enter the tournament on a three-game winning streak, and one more win will be the 400th career victory for Head Coach Jeff Stickley. Sophomore Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) is on a 25-game hitting streak, and senior Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) has hit in 20 consecutive games. Stutts also has 184 hits for his career, which puts him third all-time at W&L. With four more hits, Stutts would surpass Michael Hanson '03 (187) for the program record.
Bridgewater earned the league's top seed and will face sixth-seeded Roanoke at 11:00 am on Thursday. Second-seeded Hampden-Sydney plays fifth-seeded Randolph-Macon at 2:30 pm. The double elimination tournament will go through Sunday, April 28, with the champion earning the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
