W&L Baseball and Emory & Henry Split ODAC Doubleheader

EMORY, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team scored 21 runs in the second game of a doubleheader at Emory & Henry on Saturday, but fell in the first to earn a split against the Wasps. In the opener, E&H (8-15, 3-7 ODAC) came from behind to secure a 3-2 win, while the Generals (13-11, 7-5 ODAC) cruised to a 21-5 victory in the second.

The Generals' explosion of 21 runs in game two was highlighted by a 12-run seventh inning. W&L headed into the frame with a 9-3 lead, and more than doubled its advantage by the start of the eighth.

Over the course of the inning, the Blue and White sent 16 batters to the plate, totaled 12 RBI and tallied nine hits on five singles, three doubles and a home run. Seven Generals recorded a RBI in the frame led by senior Joe Scalzo (Ridgefield, Conn./Brunswick) and sophomore Taylor Rowe (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park). Scalzo hit a three-run home run in the rally, and Rowe ripped a three-run double to left center to cap the W&L scoring.

Junior Nate Plein (El Cajon, Calif./St. Augustine) secured his fifth victory in the contest, pitching 6.0 innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out eight. First-year Matthew McInaw (2-3) took the loss, after giving up eight runs (five earned) in 4.0 innings.

Senior Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) went 4-for-6 in the contest with two runs and two RBI. Senior Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) was 3-for-5 with four runs and two RBI, and senior Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) totaled four RBI and one run, going 3-for-5.

The Generals held a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning in the opener. Starter Ian Shaw (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) walked the first batter and was lifted for senior Eric Wisotsky (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro North). Junior Jordan Woullard singled to put runners at first and second. Then junior Connor Wise cut the lead to 2-1 on a single to left with Woullard advancing to third.

Sophomore Bransen Christopher was intentionally walked to load the bases. Junior Jake Rudolph (Cordova, Tenn./Memphis University School) came on for Wisotsky and struck out the first batter he faced for the first out of the inning. First-year Andrew Stockstill then came to the plate and hit a two-run single to center, which gave the Wasps a 3-2 walk-off victory.

Wisotsky took the loss, after allowing two runs without recording an out. Shaw recorded a no decision, despite one of his best performances of the season. He went 8.0 innings and gave up one run on four hits. Senior Will Dingus (1-4) pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the victory.

The Generals grabbed a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Stutts in the top of the third. The Blue and White stretched the lead to 2-0 in the sixth, when junior Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) came home on an error.

W&L next hosts Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday, April 2, at 4:00 pm.
