W&L Baseball Suffers 11-7 Loss at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — The Bridgewater baseball team scored six runs combined in the seventh and eighth innings to earn an 11-7 come-from-behind home victory over Washington and Lee on Thursday. It marked the second time in eight days the Generals (12-10, 6-4 ODAC) held a lead entering the seventh inning against the Eagles (15-5, 9-0 ODAC), but failed to secure a victory.

The Blue and White committed a season-high nine errors in the contest, which led to eight unearned runs for Bridgewater.

W&L led 7-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh with sophomore Cory Smith (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) on the mound. The Eagles tied the game, 7-7, without registering a hit, as the Generals committed three errors in the frame.

In the eighth, senior Eric Wisotsky (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro North) relieved Smith, but for the second straight inning, the leadoff batter reached on an error. Following a second error by the Generals, Bridgewater had runners on second and third with no out.

First-year Cavin Clyde came to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to give the Eagles an 8-7 advantage. After a groundout, junior Nick Fulk hit a one-run double to right center, junior Bryan Sanderson connected on a RBI single to second and then Sanderson scored on an error to push the game to its final margin of 11-7.

Wisotsky took the loss after pitching just 1.0 inning. He gave up four unearned runs on three hits to fall to 2-2. Junior Tyler Conley (1-0) threw 2.0 innings of relief, striking out four, to earn the win.

Senior designated hitter Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) went 4-for-5 with a run and a RBI. Senior first baseman Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) ended the day 1-for-4 with three RBI. Senior shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) led the team with three runs scored.

The Generals did most of their damage in the third and sixth innings. In the third, sophomore Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) hit a RBI single through the right side and Maragos had a two-run double, which at the time gave W&L a 4-3 advantage.

The Blue and White added three more in the sixth with two outs. Senior Luke Deary (Carlisle, Mass./Groton School) scored on a wild pitch, sophomore Nick Biumi (Cummings, Ga./Lambert) followed him home on a throwing error and Salley singled to center field to plate Stutts (7-5).

Bridgewater earned a sweep in the season series with the win. The Eagles also rallied for a 9-4 victory last Wednesday, March 20, in Lexington.

The Generals continue ODAC play on Saturday when they travel to Emory and Henry for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
