LEXINGTON, Va. — Bridgewater rallied with five runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat the Washington and Lee baseball team, 9-4, on Wednesday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
The Generals (10-9, 4-3 ODAC) held a 4-2 lead heading into the eighth with starter Eric Wisotsky (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro North) still on the mound. He had only allowed two runs (one earned ) through seven, but ran into trouble in his eighth inning.
After a groundout to start the frame, sophomore Darren Yoder (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and junior Nick Fulk (Fulks Run, Va./Broadway) connected on back-to-back singles. Fulk then stole second to put the tying run in scoring position for the Eagles (11-5, 5-0 ODAC). Junior Bryan Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) followed with a doubled to right, which scored Yoder, but Folk only advanced one base, as he had to wait to make sure the ball wasn't caught.
W&L brought in senior Ian Shaw (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) in relief and he walked the first batter to load the bases. Senior Andrew Hacker (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee Davis) then doubled down the left field line to give Bridgewater a 5-4 advantage. The Eagles added two more on a RBI groundout by Ryan Smith (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) and a one-run single by Christian Armstrong (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) to push the lead to four, 7-4. The Eagles added two more in the ninth to reach the final margin, 9-4.
Wisotsky (2-1) took the loss after throwing 7.1 innings. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits. He struck out four with one walk. First-year Justin Petock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) earned the victory out of the bullpen. He threw 2.0 innings of two-hit ball to improve to 3-1.
The Generals took the lead early in the game on a RBI single by senior Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) in the bottom of the third. Bridgewater plated two in the fourth, but Stutts tied the game (2-2) in the fifth on his fifth home run of the season.
The Blue and White regained the lead in the sixth on a RBI double by junior Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) and an error by the first baseman, which allowed Dolan to score.
W&L returns to action on Saturday when its hosts Roanoke for a doubleheader at 12:00 pm.
