GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Washington and Lee baseball team scored 20 runs on its way to a doubleheader sweep at Guilford on Saturday. The Generals (9-8, 4-2 ODAC) hit nine home runs in the two games and outscored the Quakers (9-10, 2-5), 20-9. W&L took the first, 7-2, and then won the second, 13-7.
Out of the nine home runs, seniors Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) and Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) and junior Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) all hit two. Seniors Luke Deary (Carlisle, Mass./Groton School), Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) and Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) each hit one. For Salley, he has now hit home runs in three consecutive games.
In the first contest, W&L scored two runs in the opening inning to take an early lead. Maragos hit a RBI single up the middle to plate Salley. Mait came to the plate next, and hit a sacrifice fly, which scored sophomore Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster).
In the third inning, Salley launched a solo home run to left center to stretch the lead to 3-0. The Generals added another run in the fourth on a one-run single by Stutts. Dolan delivered his first home run of the day, a solo shot, in the fifth to push the lead to 5-0.
Guilford got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, 5-1, on a one-run single by senior Kent Peterson. The Blue and White regained a five-run advantage (6-1) in the seventh when sophomore Nick Biumi (Cummings, Ga./Lambert) scored on an error.
The Quakers tallied their final run on a sacrifice fly by junior John Macon Smith, and the Generals got the score to its final margin on a solo homer by Maragos in the eighth.
Senior Ian Shaw (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) secured the victory for W&L after throwing 6.0 innings. He allowed one earned run, while striking out four to improve to 3-1. Senior Will James suffered the loss for the Quakers, giving up three runs in 2.2 innings. He fell to 1-4 on the year.
In game two, Mait started the scoring with a solo home run in the second. The Generals added three more in the third (4-0) on a three-run home run by Maragos. Guilford scored two in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by Peterson. The Quakers cut the lead to one, 4-3, on a solo homer by Corey Wallace in the fourth.
W&L took control of the game, 9-3, with a five-run fifth inning. Salley hit a two-run home run, Dolan slammed a two-run shot over the left field fence and Deary hit a solo homer to center. The Generals extended the lead to seven, 10-3, on a RBI single by Maragos in the sixth.
Guilford tallied one in the bottom of the sixth, and the Generals responded with a Chris Nault (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) RBI groundout in the seventh to push the advantage to 11-4. The Quakers plated three runners in the bottom of the seventh, but the Blue and White answered with two in the eighth to reach the final margin of 13-7. Stutts led off the inning with a homer to center, and Mait had a RBI single up the middle.
Junior Nate Plein (El Cajon, Calif./St. Augustine) started the game and went 6.0 innings to get the win. He moved to 3-1 after allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts. Lou Trosch (1-2) suffered the loss. He pitched 4.2 innings and allowed eight runs on eight hits.
Salley finished the day 6-for-10 with two home runs, five runs scored and three RBI. Maragos went 5-for-10 with two homers, two runs and six RBI. Stutts ended the doubleheader 5-for-11 with a homer, two runs and three RBI.
The Generals next host Earlham at Cap'n Dick Smith Field on Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
