NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Virginia Sports Information Directors has announced its 2011 College Division All-State Baseball team and Washington and Lee placed a pair of players on this year’s squad.
Laswell, the 2011 ODAC Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-South Region honoree, wrapped up his senior campaign with a 4-1 record and three saves in 16 appearances including seven starts. He posted an ERA of 2.01 in 67.0 innings. Opponents hit just .185 against him as he allowed just 44 base hits and 12 walks while striking out 70. He led the ODAC in ERA, batting average against, strikeouts and runs allowed (16), and he ranked in the Top 5 in hits allowed and earned runs allowed (15).
In just three seasons at W&L after playing at Air Force as a first-year, he finished his career ranked fourth all-time in appearances with 48. His 70 strikeouts this year were the fifth-most in a single season at W&L and his five career saves are good for third all-time.
Salley, who was also a first team all-conference selection, split time at catcher and designated hitter and finished the season as the Generals' top hitter with a .407 batting average while banging out a team-best 44 base hits. He started 30 of a possible 31 games and led W&L with 11 doubles while clubbing one home run, scoring 30 runs and driving in 19. He also drew 20 walks against just seven strikeouts. His .407 average at the plate was good for third in the league, his .511 on-base percentage was good for third and his .537 slugging percentage was the sixth-best mark in the ODAC.
The Generals finished 2011 at 15-16 overall and 12-6 in the ODAC. The 12 conference wins were the most for a W&L team since it won 15 in 2003. Bridgewater ended the Generals' season with a 7-4 win on day two of the ODAC Tournament.
