W&L Baseball Tripped up by Averett, 5-3

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Averett University benefited from four Washington and Lee errors in pulling out a 5-3 win over the Generals' baseball team on Thursday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Generals (10-10) committed four costly miscues in the field, including three in the sixth inning as the Cougars (18-11) held on for their third win over W&L this season.

Averett scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning as junior Jimbo Newcomb (Quinton, New Kent) reached on an error with one out allowing  first-year J.T. Crowder (Louisa, Va./Hanover) to score the game's first run.

W&L's fielding miscues continued in the sixth inning as three consecutive errors led to two unearned runs and a 3-0 lead for AU. After a leadoff walk to Kyle Newcomb (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek), sophomore Cody Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) attempted a sacrifice bunt. A throwing error by senior pitcher Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaidd Jesuit) allowed Kyle Newcombe to score, while Moore advanced to second. Sophomore Jason Carter (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) then reached on another W&L error while attempting to lay down a sacrifice bunt moving Moore up to third.

Crowder made it 3-0 with yet another botched sacrifice bunt before junior Eric Wisotsky (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro North) relieved Strong and recorded the final three outs of the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, back-to-back singles by juniors Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) and Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) gave the Generals a pair of baserunners with nobody out. With two outs, senior Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) drove in Mait with a base hit to make it a 3-1 ballgame. Junior Chris Nault (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) followed with a single that loaded the bases and senior Mike Decembrino's (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) two-out, two-run single tied the game at 3-3 as both Maragos and James came around to score.

Averett scored the game-clinching runs on a two-run Jimbo Newcomb single with two outs in the eighth inning that scored Crowder and James Carter.

In the ninth, W&L brought the game-winning run to the plate following an error and a hit batsmen, but a game-ending double play quelled any rally by the Generals.

Senior Tyler Muench (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) earned the win for Averett. He allowed just three runs on eight hits, five walks and three strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Sophomore Cody Beaver (Danville, Va./George Washington) picked up the save, getting the last two outs for the Cougars.

Wistosky took the loss for W&L. He surrendered two runs on two hits and a walk in 2.2 innings. Senior Jody Davis (McLean, Va./Langley) started for the Generals. He did not allow a run, while giving up four hits with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings.

Junior Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) improved his hitting streak to 15 games for W&L. He was 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and was hit by a pitch. Decembrino finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Mait was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Jason Carter finished 2-for-5 with a run for the Cougars. Crowder was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Jimbo Newcomb added one hit in five at-bats with three driven in.

W&L is slated to return to action on Saturday when it travels to Hampden-Sydney for a 12:00 pm doubleheader.
