LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team posted its first two wins of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Maine-Presque Isle at Cap'n Dick Smith Field on Saturday afternoon.
W&L (2-5) rallied for a 6-5 nine-inning win over the Owls (0-9) in the opener, then ran away with an 11-0 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Generals took a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning before the Owls managed to scratch across four unearned runs and take a 4-0 lead. Anthony Batchelder started the Owls' rally with a single before being replaced by Lucas Molloy as a pinch runner. Alex Csiernik then reached on an error on a potential double-play ball that allowed Molloy to advance to third. A Jake Fillebrown double drove in the first run and put runners on second and third with nobody out.
A walk and a passed ball allowed Csiernik to score and Jake Bergeron advanced to second on the play as UMPI knotted the game at 2-2. Following a strikeout of Josiah Brazier, a walk to Steven Thorne and a hit batsman loaded the bases for Carlos Villoria, who double in a pair of runs to put the Owls up 4-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, senior Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) singled with one out and was then forced at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of senior Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond). With two outs, junior Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) singled and junior Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) then clubbed two-run double to score James and Stutts and tie the game at 4-4.
After neither team scored in the eighth inning, Thorne hit an RBI double in the ninth to put UMPI back on top 5-4, before the Generals rallied again in the bottom of the frame.
Decembrino led off with a walk and went to second on a bunt single by James. Stutts then doubled to score Decembrino and tie the game at 5-5. Following a Salley strikeout, junior Alex Maragos was intentionally walked to load the bases and junior pinch hitter Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) laced the game-winning single to give the Generals their first win of the season.
First-year Matt Hedberg (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) started for W&L and was in line for his first win before the UMPI rally. He allowed two runs (0 ER) on eight hits with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Senior Jody Davis (McLean, Va./Langley) picked up the win, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief.
Stutts led W&L at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI. Salley was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and two RBIs and James was 1-for-5 with two runs scored.
Fillebrown took the loss for the Owls, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
Thorne, Jordan Duffy, Fillebrown and Villoria all had two base hits for the Owls. Villoria drove in a pair of runs and Thorne had one RBI and scored once.
In the nightcap, W&L scored nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings to run away with the sweep. After scoring single runs in the first and third innings, the Generals tallied four runs in the fifth on a sac fly by sophomore Kyle Witty (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman), an RBI single by Mait and a two-run double by sophomore Josh Josephson (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage) to assume a 6-0 lead.
The runs did not stop there, as Salley hit a grand slam to left and Josephson added an RBI groundout in the sixth as W&L saw four pitchers in the inning.
Junior Ian Shaw (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) earned the win, tossing five shutout innings. He gave up just three hits, one walk and struck out three.
At the plate, Stutts finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Salley was 1-for-3 with four RBIS and three runs and Josephson was 1-for-3 with three runs driven in.
Anthony Batchelder was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs on three hits and five walks with a strikeout in 4.1 innings.
Villoria, Ted Walker, Joshua Gale and Brazier were all 1-for-3 for the Owls.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they host Southern Virginia at 3:00 pm.
