W&L Baseball Downed by Emory University, 5-2

ATLANTA, Ga. – Emory University used a three-run fifth inning to defeat the Washington and Lee baseball team, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

The Eagles (4-1) struck first with an RBI single by sophomore third baseman Ryan Toscano in the second inning, but the Generals (0-4) knotted the game in the top of the third inning when senior centerfielder Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) led off the inning with a double down the left field line.  He later advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single by senior second baseman Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond).

Toscano started the Emory rally in the fifth inning when he led off with an infield single.  He scored on an RBI double by first-year rightfielder Brett Lake, who was later driven in on a double by centerfielder Brandon Hannon.  Hannon then scored on a single by sophomore first baseman Jared Welch.

Emory added another run for a 5-1 lead in the sixth inning when Toscano produced a two-out single, advanced to third on a single by catcher Josh Bokor, and then stole home.

W&L tacked on a run in the eighth inning when Alex Maragos doubled to left and scored following two straight errors by Toscano.  However, senior lefthander Connor McGuiness retired Decembrino with a ground out to second base to end the Generals' threat.

Junior righthander Ian Shaw was shackled with the loss (0-2) after allowing four earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts (0 walks) in five innings of work.  Maragos and junior third baseman Chris Nault (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) led the Generals at the dish, both going 2-for-4 with a double.  James finished 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Toscano paced the Eagles with three hits in four at-bats, two runs scored and one RBI.  Hannon completed his day 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, while first-year righthander Connor Dillman earned the win by allowing one earned run over six innings.  He struck out six and walked two batters.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it completes its Georgia trip with a 3:00 pm game at Piedmont.
