LEXINGTON, Va. – Bridgewater College limited the Washington and Lee baseball team to just six hits in eking out a 4-3 win over the Generals on Tuesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
First-years Robert Gallet (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) and Tyler Slanovec (Easton, Pa./Freedom) combined to hold the Generals' offense in check for most of the day as Bridgewater improved to 18-12 overall and 12-2 in the ODAC while the Generals fell to 13-12 and 10-5 in league play.
Gallet started and allowed three runs on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings to improve to 4-1 on the season before Slanovec came in and slammed the door on a W&L rally to post his first collegiate save. He tossed 2.2 innings of perfect relief, striking out a pair.
W&L took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning following a double by sophomore Mike Savas (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton), a sacrifice bunt by junior Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pensbury) and an RBI single off the bat of senior Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill).
However, BC came back with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Eagles opened the inning with back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt by junior Jay Thompson put runners on second and third with one out. Senior Brett Howell (Manassas, Va./Osburn) then lofted a sacrifice fly to center to knot the game at 1-1.
First-year Zach Hynes (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) then reached on an error that allowed the Eagles second run to cross the plate and first-year Bryan Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) followed with an RBI double to put BC up 3-1.
Bridgewater made it a 4-1 game in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by senior Kevin Kirk (Manassas, Va./Osburn).
The Generals got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out, two-run single by junior Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) that cut BC's lead to 4-3.
W&L was threatening in the seventh, as consecutive walks to Decembrino and Cardona put runners on first and second with one out, but Slanovec came in induced a popup from sophomore Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and a groundout from sophomore Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) to preserve the Eagles' one-run advantage.
Slanovec remained perfect in the eighth and ninth innings, not allowing a single W&L base runner as Bridgewater avenged an earlier defeat at the hands of Washington and Lee.
Sophomore Ian Shaw (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) started for the Generals and fell to 3-2 on the season. He allowed three runs (1 earned) on six hits and one walk with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
At the plate, the Generals were led by James, who finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Cardona was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI and sophomore Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Kirk was 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Eagles and junior Devon Snow (Manassas, Va./Osburn) also finished 3-for-4 at the plate. Sanderson finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
W&L returns to action tomorrow when it hosts EMU beginning at 5:00 pm.
