W&L Baseball Rallies to Top Bridgewater, 10-5

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team scored six runs over the final two innings to knock off ODAC-leading Bridgewater College, 10-5, on Friday afternoon at Jopson Field.

With the win, W&L improved to 12-10 on the season and 9-3 in the ODAC to move within a half a game of Bridgewater (15-12, 9-3 ODAC) for the top spot in the ODAC standings.

Trailing 5-4 to start the eighth inning, the Generals started their rally with a leadoff single by sophomore Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside). After Salley stole second base, sophomore Luke Deary (Carlisle, Mass./Groton School) tied the game at 5-5 with an RBI single.

Deary moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by junior C.J. Thompson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) and then scored when junior Chas Straface (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) singled into right center to give W&L a 6-5 lead. Bridgewater was then able to get out of the inning without surrendering another run.

BC managed to get a pair of runners on base with just one out in the bottom of the eighth, but sophomore Jake Pelton (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) was able to work out of the jam, inducing back-to-back flyouts to preserve W&L's one-run lead.

The Generals extended their lead and took control of the contest, scoring four runs in the ninth inning.

Sophomore Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) led off the inning and was able to reach first after striking out on a wild pitch. He then moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) that resulted in error and allowed Maragos to reach first base safely.

Salley then moved the runners up to second and third with a sacrifice bunt before Deary was intentionally walked to load the bases. Thompson followed with a single that scored Stutts and gave W&L a 7-5 lead. Following a Straface strikeout, junior Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) singeld to center to drive in Deary and Maragos and push the W&L lead out to 9-5.

The Generals capped the scoring when Thompson scored on a wild pitch.

W&L, which had assumed an early 4-0 lead after two innings before BC took a 5-4 lead after five innings, was led by Deary, who finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs on the day. Salley finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Thompson was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Straface finished 2-for-5 with a run driven in and a run scored.

Pelton earned the win (1-0) with 3.0 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit. Junior Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) started for the Generals, surrendering four runs (2 earned) on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings.

Junior John Bayse took the loss for the Eagles, allowing two hits and two runs in 1.1 innings. Senior Jake Wade led BC at the plate, going for 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Junior Jay Thompson was 1-for-3with an RBI and a run scored.
