W&L Baseball Outslugs EMU En Route to 4-2 Win
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team slugged three home runs and sophomore Ian Shaw (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) allowed just two runs as W&L defeated Eastern Mennonite, 4-2, on Tuesday afternoon at the EMU Baseball Field.
The Generals extended their lead to 3-0 when sophomore Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) led off the fourth inning with a solo home run, his second of the season.
EMU (8-19, 2-11) pulled to within 3-1 in the fifth inning on an RBI single by junior Dylan Smith, then cut the Generals' lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning with an unearned run.
Junior C.J. Thompson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) added a pinch-hit solo shot in the ninth to give the Generals a 4-2 advantage and after the Royals put runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, senior Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) shut the door on EMU's rally by getting senior Chris Harpine to pop out to end the game.
Shaw improved to 3-1 on the season with the win. He allowed two runs (1 earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts while not walking a batter in 6.0 innings.
Stutts finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored and Cardona had two hits in four at-bats and scored a run.
Smith was 3-for-4 with and RBI to lead EMU. First-year Ryan McAlister was 2-for-4 with a walk.
First-year Adam Posey took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in 9.0 innings.
W&L continues ODAC play tomorrow when it travels to Bridgewater for a 4:00 pm game.
