LC Baseball Team Takes Doubleheader From W&L
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team was swept in an afternoon doubleheader by Lynchburg College on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
W&L, (4-6, 2-2 ODAC) fell to the Hornets, 5-0, in the opener and then dropped a 9-6 affair in the nightcap.
In game one, Lynchburg senior Matt Morgan (Bedford, Va./Liberty) limited W&L just two hits and two walks in 8.1 innings as he improved to 3-0 on the season. He struck out seven batters in the contest .
Lynchburg (7-6, 4-0) tallied all the offense it would need in game one when it notched a pair of runs in the first inning. The Hornets scored their first run on a wild pitch by W&L junior Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and then made it a 2-0 game on an RBI groundout by sophomore Michael Kenah (Clifton, Va./Robinson).
LC added a single run in the third and two more in the fourth inning as Morgan continued to keep the W&L bats silent.
Strong took the loss for W&L, falling to 2-2 on the season. He allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks in 5.0 innings.
Junior Richard Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) led the Hornets, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Senior Jordan Watkins (Freeland, Md./Hereford) doubled and scored a pair of runs and Kenah and first-year Brock Shiflett (Richmond, Va./Steward School) finished with two RBIs apiece.
In game two, LC raced out to an 8-2 lead after four innings before W&L began chipping away at the lead and ultimately getting the tying runs on base late, before the Hornets secured the win.
Lynchburg blew the game open with five runs in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead after 2.5 innings of play. The big blow in the third for LC was a two-run home run by Kenah that gave the Hornets a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the frame, W&L scratched across a pair of runs when junior second baseman Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) drove in a pair of runs with a two-out single that pulled W&L within four runs at 6-2.
Lynchburg got the two runs back in the top of the fourth to push back out to a 8-2 lead, but W&L got a solo home run by sophomore Joe Scalzo (Ridgefield, Conn./Brunswick) in the fourth inning to pull to within 8-3. A passed by led to a Generals' run in the fifth inning and W&L tallied a pair of runs in the seventh on a pair of RBI-groundouts to get within two runs at 8-6.
However, W&L had just one baserunner the rest of the way and LC added an insurance run in the ninth to preserve the two-game sweep.
Junior Jody Davis (McLean, Va./Langley) started and took the loss for W&L, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and one walk in 2.2 innings. Sophomore Eric Wisotsky (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro North) allowed two runs on two hits and a walk in 1.1 innings before senior Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) stymied the Hornet offense with 4.0 innings or perfect relief. He did not allow a baserunner and recorded five strikeouts.
Cardona, James and Salley each finished 2-for-5 for W&L. Salley scored twice, James had two RBIs and Cardona had a run scored, two doubles and a stolen base.
First-year James Womack (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) picked up the win for LC, allowing two runs in 2.1 innings of relief. Junior Jared Millner (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) earned the save.
At the plate, Kenah finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Sophomore Michael Del Buono (Clifton, Va./Robinson) had three hits in five at-bats with two runs and two RBIs.
W&L returns to action when it hosts Gettysburg for a Sunday doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm
