LEXINGTON, Va. – Bridgewater College tallied eight runs in the top of the first inning, then kept the Washington and Lee baseball team at bay the remainder of the game in pulling out a 16-8 win over the Generals at Cap’n Dick Smith Field on Tuesday evening.
The first seven BC (17-12, 12-2) batters reached base to start the game and the Eagles sent 12 men to the plate in the opening inning to take an 8-0 lead. Bridgewater’s offense kept rolling in the second inning as the Eagles tallied three more runs to assume an 11-0 lead after just one and a half innings.
W&L (11-14, 7-8) got on the board with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings on a sacrifice fly by senior third baseman Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford), an RBI single by senior catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) and an RBI double off the bat of sophomore designated hitter Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond).
Following a mammoth two-run homerun from BC senior rightfielder Andy Chrismer (Gettysburg, Pa./Littlwtown) in the top of the fifth that made the score 13-3, W&L tallied four runs in the bottom of the fifth, including a two-run homerun by Plantholt, to creep within six runs (13-7).
However, the Eagles tacked on a single run in the seventh and a pair of runs in the eighth to preserve the win.
Senior Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) started on two days rest for the Generals and allowed six runs on five hits and one walk and did not retire a batter to slip to 3-4 on the season.
Plantholt led W&L at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Senior first baseman Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Lewis was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore Kevin Chandler (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) started for Bridgewater and earned the win as he surrendered seven runs (6 earned) on eight hits, one walk and two strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
Senior centerfielder Drew Easter (Broadway, Va./Broadway) and junior third baseman Brett Howell (Manassas, Va./Osburn) led the BC hit parade with four hits apiece. Easter added a double, two RBI and a pair of runs, while Howell drove in three runs and scored twice. First-year leftfielder Jonathan Mason (Sterling, Va./Park View) finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two driven in and sophomore catcher Devon Snow (Manassas, Va./Osburn) added three runs scored.
