VWC Takes Doubleheader From W&L Baseball Team

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan swept an afternoon doubleheader from the Washington and Lee baseball team on Saturday afternoon at Marlins Field. W&L dropped game one, 1-0, and fell, 7-1, in the nightcap.

W&L (12-16, 8-10) senior Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) was a hard-luck loser in game one as he allowed just one run on two hits with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings to fall to 3-5 on the season. VWC (22-13, 13-5) tallied its lone run in the second inning on a walk, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single to eke out the win.

Senior catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Generals and sophomore leftfielder C.J. Thompson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) was for 1-for-2.
In game two, sophomore Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) allowed four runs on two hits and four walks in 2.0 innings of work in suffering his first loss (4-1) of the year. Junior Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) allowed one run on two hits with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings of relief.

At the plate, the Generals were led by first-year outfielder George Youmans (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian), who finished 2-for-4 with a double. First-year shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) was 2-for-3 with a double and run scored and senior second baseman John Ditore (Seattle, Wash./Bishop Blanchet) was 2-for-5 with a double.

The Generals return to action on Thursday when they participate in the first round of the ODAC Tournament. W&L will be the No. 6 seed and will take on the top seed (which has yet to be determined) at a time yet to be determined.
