Numerous W&L Students Earn Winter Scholar-Athlete Awards
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee
Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 185 students
earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter
term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams
and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.
Additionally, 19 of the students honored achieved a 4.0
grade-point average, including first-year soccer player Lauren
Abraham (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin), senior Academic
All-America wrestler Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier),
senior All-ODAC swimmer Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte
Country Day), senior rider Camille Cobb (Huntersville, N.C./Harding
University), senior swimmer Frank Cullo (Sewickley, Pa./Central
Catholic), senior soccer player Heather Deisher (Cape Girardeau,
Mo./Cape Central), sophomore track and field and cross country
athlete Katie Driest (Davidson, N.C./North Mecklenburg), senior
soccer player Allie Espina (Gaithersburg, Md./Good Counsel),
sophomore track and field athlete David Fishman (Westfield,
N.J./Westfield), senior Ryan Henner (Avondale Estates,
Ga./Chamblee), first-year tennis player Christopher Hu (Ridgewood,
N.J./Ridgewood), junior rider Kerriann Laubach (McMurray,
Pa./Peters Township), sophomore All-ODAC cross country and track
and field athlete Annelise Madison (Roca, Neb./Norris), senior
All-ODAC rider Tamara Morse (Bristow, Va./Brentsville), sophomore
swimmer Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian
Academy), senior basketball player Will Smith (Lothian,
Md./Severn), sophomore golfer Jake Struebing (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst
Central), first-year track and field and cross country runner Scott
Sugden (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) and senior All-America
swimmer Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville).
Other notable athletes to receive the scholar-athlete award were junior ODAC Volleyball Player of the Year M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. John's), senior All-America soccer players Kat Lawson (White Post, Va./Clarke County) and Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings), senior All-America tennis player Lauren Lukas (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln), junior All-America swimmer Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School), junior All-America football player Jake Pelton (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello), senior All-America tennis player Trelsie Sadler (Wakefield, R.I./Groton School), senior All-America swimmer Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery), junior All-America swimmer Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley), senior ODAC Offensive Football Player of the Year Charlie Westfal (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and senior All-America tennis player Ellen Yeatman (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central).

All of W&L's 24 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the women's cross country team with a 3.684. The highest men's team GPA was the swimming team with a 3.424 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 3.036.
