W&L Women's Swimmers Honored by ODAC
Lexington, Va. -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference recently
announced its All-ODAC Women’s Swimming teams and W&L led
the way with 10 first-team selections and 13 overall.
In addition its 10 First Team All-ODAC selections, the Generals
placed three swimmers on the second team and garnered three of the
five major conference awards. Senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian,
Va./Governor’s School) took home Swimmer of the Year honors
for the second-straight year, first-year Lauren Starnes (Harrison,
Tenn./Girls Preparatory) was named Rookie of the Year and Head
Coach Kami Gardner was named the league’s Coach of the
Year.
Strachan won the 200 back and the 200 fly and was the top ODAC
finisher in the 100 back as well at the ODAC Championship Meet. She
also participated on the winning 200 and 400 medley relays. Her
time in the 200 back (2:05.71) set a new ODAC record. Strachan went
on to be named Honorable Mention All-America after finishing 11th
at the NCAA Division III Championship meet in the 200 back.
In winning Rookie of the Year honors, Starnes competed in five
events at the ODAC Championships and earned victories in the 200
(1:57.63) and 500 free (5:13.10). She placed third in the 1650 free
(18:31.22) and participated on the winning 400 (3:39.62) and 800
(8:00.00) free relay teams.
Gardner, in her second-year at W&L, led the Generals to their
19th ODAC swimming title. Gardner has coached 22 All-ODAC swimmers,
as well as seven major award winners, including the last two
swimmer of the year and rookie of the year honorees.
Joining Strachan and Starnes on the All-ODAC First Team were
seniors Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines’s) and
Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./West Lakes), juniors Lynn Bazzel
(Atlanta, Ga./Lovett), Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South
Mecklenburg) and Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School),
sophomore Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and first-years
Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) and Brielle Weinstein
(Summerville, S.C./Pinewood Prep). First-years Jocelyn Cassada
(Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day), Joanie Hudak (Boxford,
Mass./Masconomet) and Katie Salvati (Roselle Park, N.J./Mount Saint
Mary Academy) were named Second Team All-ODAC.
Other top individual ODAC finishers for W&L included Worsham in
the 200 individual medley (2:12.60), Miata in the 50 free (24.82)
and 100 fly (1:00.46), Mahoney in the 400 individual medley
(4:45.04) and 200 breast (2:28.24), Bazzel in the 100 breast
(1:08.41), Hayden in the 1650 free (18:04.60) and Simpson in the
100 free (54.57).
The Generals also won all five relay events in school-and
ODAC-record times. The 200 free relay team (Miata, Fredericks,
Worsham, Simpson) won with a time of 1:38.17. The 400 free relay
(Simpson, Starnes, Cassada, Worsham) won in 3:39.62, while the 800
free relay team (Starnes, Hayden, Mahoney, Simpson) recorded a time
of 8:00.00. W&L took the 200 medley relay (Strachan, Bazzel,
Miata, Simpson) in 1:49.13, while capturing the 400 medley relay
(Strachan, Fredericks, Miata, Worsham) in 4:00.28.
