NFHCA Recognizes W&L Field Hockey
CHANDLER, Ariz. -- The National Field Hockey Coaches Association
(NFHCA) recently announced its 2008 NFHCA Division III National
Academic Squad and Washington and Lee had several team members
honored.
Seniors Melissa Dolan (Centennial, Colo./Kent Denver), Liz Garson
(Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Christina Merchant (Midlothian,
Va./Collegiate), juniors Alex Caritis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side
Academy), Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen’s
& St. Agnes), Stephanie Mansey (Mendham, N.J./Randolph) and
Grace McGee (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam), sophomores Kathy
Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville), Kate Donnelly (Houston,
Texas/St. John’s), Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr),
and Kelly Tran (Simsbury, Conn./Ethel Walker) and first-years
Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross), Lizz
Dye (Houston, Texas/Episcopal), Susie Giampalmo (Glenwood,
Md./Glenelg) and Annie Stevenson (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country
Day) were named to the squad. All told, 1,069 players were honored
for having recorded at least a 3.30 GPA for the first term of the
2008-09 academic year.
For Dolan, it was the fourth-straight year that she has garnered
the award, while Caritis, Garson, Habliston and Mansey have all won
the award each of the last three years. The 15 players that W&L
had honored are the most that the Generals have had in one season,
surpassing the 13 that they claimed last year.
Washington and Lee wrapped up the 2008 season with a 10-9 overall
record, 5-2 ODAC and advanced to the ODAC semifinals for the
seventh-straight year.
The National Academic Squad honors those athletes that have
achieved at least a 3.30 GPA through the first term of the 2008-09
academic year.
