Two Generals Earn All-Region Volleyball Accolades

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) released its 2008 All-Region Teams on Thursday afternoon and Washington and Lee had two players honored on the South Region squad.

Senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) was selected to the 14-player first team, while junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) was recognized on the honorable mention squad. Ulrich will now be considered for AVCA All-America honors.

Ulrich was named to the all-region team for the first time in her career. The 2008 ODAC Tournament MVP and a two-time First Team All-ODAC selection, Ulrich finished the season with 297 kills, 245 digs, 57 assists, 56 blocks, and 27 service aces, while also totaling a .325 hitting percentage. She completed her four seasons with 919 kills, 874 digs, 204 blocks and 165 service aces, ranking in the Top 15 all-time at W&L in each category.

Phillips was recognized on the honorable mention team after garnering first team recognition a season ago. The 2008 ODAC Player of the Year and a two-time First Team All-ODAC honoree, Phillips led the team with 376 kills, while also posting a .240 hitting percentage. Additionally, she has claimed 376 digs and 49 blocks. Phillips was an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American following the 2007 season. She will enter her senior campaign with 919 career kills and 612 career digs.

Washington and Lee finished the 2008 campaign with a 31-7 overall record after falling to Mt. St. Joseph in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Generals went 10-0 in the ODAC and claimed their eighth-straight conference title.
