W&L Volleyball Picked to Win ODAC

SALEM, Va. -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2007 preseason volleyball coaches poll on Thursday afternoon and Washington and Lee was picked to win the conference.

The Generals, who have won each of the past six conference titles and enter the season with a 62-match regular-season conference winning streak, received nine first-place votes to total 118 points. Bridgewater was selected second with one first-place vote and 106 points, while Randolph-Macon was picked third with 104 points and one vote for the top spot. The remainder of the poll includes Virginia Wesleyan (82), Roanoke (74), Lynchburg (72), Emory & Henry (51), Eastern Mennonite (43), Randolph (35), Guilford (25) and Sweet Briar (16).

W&L returns five starters from last season's team that finished 29-8 overall and 10-0 in the ODAC. The Generals advanced to the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Tournament and defeated NYU, the region's top seed in the process.

Juniors Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) and Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) headline the list of returnees after earning All-ODAC honors a season ago. Maurer was a first-team selection after totaling a team-best 393 kills, 375 digs and 55 blocks last season. Ulrich was a second-team pick after posting 282 kills, 263 digs, 80 blocks and 67 service aces.

W&L opens its 2007 season by hosting the W&L Invitational on Sept. 7-8. The Generals open the tournament by playing Southern Virginia on Fri., Sept. 7 at 4:00 pm.
