W&L Women's Basketball Picked Fifth in ODAC Preseason Poll
SALEM, Va. -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its 2007-08 Preseason Women's Basketball Coaches Poll on Thursday morning at the league's media day held at the Salem Civic Center. Washington and Lee was selected fifth overall in voting conducted by the league's coaches.
Three-time defending champion Randolph-Macon received seven first-place votes and 112 points to top the poll. Virginia Wesleyan claimed three first-place tallies and 103 total points, followed by Eastern Mennonite with 101 points and one first-place nod. Roanoke totaled 91 points and sits in fourth place, followed by W&L (74), Bridgewater (69), Guilford (59), Lynchburg (46), Emory & Henry (37), Randolph (19) and Hollins (14).
The Generals finished the 2006-07 season with a school record 16 victories (16-11) and advanced to the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament. Eight letterwinners, four seniors and three starters return from a team that upset a ranked opponent for the first time in program history and ranked in the Top 15 nationally in several NCAA statistical categories, including rebounding and scoring defense.
Leading the way for W&L will be senior forward Kristen Krouchick (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy), a Second Team All-ODAC selection last season. Krouchick averaged 13.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game a season ago and enters her final campaign with 1,051 career points.
Senior Emily Wolff (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and junior Kara Nadeau (Oakton, Va./ Oakton) also return after starting a majority of the games last winter. Wolff averaged 8.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per outing, while Nadeau contributed 6.0 points and 5.3 boards per contest.
Washington and Lee opens its 2007-08 season at the Franklin & Marshall Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 17-18 in Lancaster, Pa. The Generals begin with Alvernia at 1:00 pm.
