Lexington, Va. -- Washington and Lee's men's and women's lacrosse teams have both received preseason national rankings by multiple sources.
Lacrosse Magazine has the women ranked 13th overall in Division III, while the men are picked 19th overall. Additionally, the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) released its preseason coaches poll on Wednesday and the Generals' men are listed at No. 15 in that poll. Salisbury (1st), Gettysburg (2nd) and Cortland (3rd) sit atop both men's polls, with fellow ODAC members Roanoke and Lynchburg, claiming the fourth and fifth spots in the USILA poll and the sixth and eighth positions in the Lacrosse Magazine poll. Hampden-Sydney also ranks 17th in the USILA Poll.
Franklin & Marshall (1st), The College of New Jersey (2nd) and Salisbury (3rd) topped the Lacrosse Magazine women's poll that also lists ODAC member Roanoke at No. 20. The Generals will take on Franklin & Marshall and TCNJ this season, along with No. 6 Middlebury, No. 18 Mary Washington and Roanoke.
The Washington and Lee men return six starters from last season's team that finished 9-6 overall and 4-2 in the ODAC. Of the Generals six losses, four were by two goals or less to nationally-ranked opponents. W&L begins its 2008 season on Feb. 21 when it takes on Savannah College of Art & Design at the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla.
The W&L women also return six starters from last season's 15-4 team that won the ODAC title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Generals open the 2008 season on Feb. 19 at Sewanee.
