Two Generals Named to VaSID All-State Volleyball Squad
FERRUM, Va. -- The Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) recently released its 2007 college division all-state volleyball team and the Generals had two players honored.
Junior outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) and sophomore outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) were both named to the first team.
Maurer received first team accolades after setting a new school record for digs in a match (40) and being only the seventh player in school history to reach 1,000 career kills (1,136). For the season, Maurer played in 108 games and led the team with 423 digs and was second with 369 kills.
Phillips was tabbed to the first team along with being a 2007 All-South Region pick and a First Team All-ODAC selection. Phillips led the team with 396 kills and was second with a .314 hitting percentage this fall. She also racked up 196 digs, along with 48 blocks and three service aces. Additionally, Phillips was named the 2007 ODAC Tournament MVP after her performances at the conference championship.
In 2007, the Generals completed the season with a 29-6 overall mark, won their seventh-straight ODAC Championship and made their seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
