LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Interim Athletic Director Chuck O'Connell has announced the appointment of Matt Phillips as assistant athletic trainer. Phillips begins his appointment immediately.
"We are pleased to have Matt Phillips join our athletic training staff," said O'Connell. "Our student-athletes will benefit greatly from his experience and committment to maintaining the health of our intercollegiate athletes."
Phillips comes to W&L after completing his requirements in August of 2006 for a master's degree in health and movement science from Virginia Commonwealth University. As part of the curriculum, Phillips served as the head athletic trainer at George Wythe High School in Richmond, Va., from 2004-06.
"It is a great honor to have the opportunity to work at Washington and Lee," said Phillips. "I am looking forward to assisting the athletics staff, coaches and athletes."
A 2004 graduate of Lynchburg College with a bachelor's degree in athletic training, Phillips served as a student assistant trainer with the Hornets and has also worked numerous summer camps at the University of Virginia. Additionally, he assisted the Lynchburg Hillcats baseball team during the summer of 2003.
"I am excited to have Matt on board with us for the upcoming year," stated Interim Head Athletic Trainer Josh Williamson. "He has a solid background in athletic training and I feel that he will be a great addition to our staff."
Phillips, a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and the Virginia Athletic Trainers Association (VATA), is certified by the American Heart Association for CPR and First Aid.
