NUMEROUS W&L STUDENTS EARN SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARDS

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Interim Director of Athletics Chuck O'Connell has announced that 155 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed fall term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

Additionally, 16 of the students honored achieved grade-point averages of 4.0 or higher (an A+ is worth 4.330 at W&L). Among the students achieving 4.0 or higher GPA's were senior women's soccer player Emily Binns (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian), junior All-ODAC and All-Region cross country runner Tom Brower (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy), junior women's soccer player Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass), sophomore women's tennis player Tori Christmas (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), senior Academic All-America wrestler Max Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa./LaSalle College), senior men's track athlete Andrew Fischer (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South), junior wrestler Adam Hockensmith (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown), senior women's tennis player Katie Kingsbury (Jenkintown, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian), junior All-America men's swimmer Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro), senior golfer Matt Nickles (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora), senior women's basketball player Sarah Otey (Williamsburg, Va./Hampton-Roads), senior All-America men's soccer player Scot Pittman (Waxhaw, N.C./Charlotte Country Day), freshman volleyball player Rachel Skains (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day), freshman cross country and track athlete Dorothy Todd (Watkinsville, Ga./Athens Academy), freshman wrestler Russ Weems (Greenville, S.C./St. Joseph's Catholic School) and senior golfer Anthony Zappin (Huntington, W.Va./St. Joseph Central).

Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards included senior All-ODAC and All-Region field hockey player Kim Babbitt (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), sophomore All-ODAC and All-Region cross country and track athlete Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Episcopal), sophomore All-America swimmers Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) and Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Lansdale Catholic), junior All-ODAC and All-Region men's soccer player Josh Dodds (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar), ODAC Field Hockey Player of the Year Kendall Korte (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox), junior All-ODAC and All-Region baseball player James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park), senior All-America women's tennis player Kristen McClung (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic), junior All-ODAC and All-Region football player Mark Snoddy (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster), sophomore All-America women's tennis player Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina), sophomore All-ODAC and All-Region women's cross country and track athlete Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood), freshman All-ODAC and All-Region women's cross country and track athlete Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge), sophomore All-ODAC and All-Region women's soccer player Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall), sophomore All-ODAC and All-Region cross country and track athlete Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) and senior All-America women's tennis player Ginny Wortham (Richmond, Va./Collegiate).

Twenty-one of W&L's 23 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the men's cross country team with a 3.462. The highest women's team GPA was the field hockey team with a 3.408 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 2.897.

W&L had an outstanding fall season on the playing fields as well. W&L's nine fall sports teams combined for a record of 81-22-5 (.773) with football, volleyball, men's cross country and women's cross country all winning ODAC Championships.
