W&L CLAIMS 11 ALL-STATE CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS
LEXINGTON, Va. -- After having won the men's and women's meets at the Virginia State Division III Championships on Saturday at Eastern Mennonite University, Washington and Lee claimed 11 all-state runners based upon their performances.
The W&L men received six all-state citations led by senior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County), who won the state meet with a time of 27:32.31. Sophomore Alex Mahoney (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier/Singapore American), freshman Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma), senior Andrew Johnson (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy), sophomore Andrew Friski (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) and freshman Alex Jackson (Centreville, Va./Westfield) were all also named to the all-state team.
Mahoney placed second overall (27:42.93), Welsh was fourth (28:12.94), Johnson was 10th (29:46.18), Friski placed 12th (29:56.67) and Jackson finished 13th (29:59.05). Each of the top 14 finishers garner all-state recognition.
On the women's side, W&L claimed five all-state citations led by freshman Jackie Burns (Burke, Va./Woodward Academy), who finished first overall with a time of 24:49.98. She was joined on the all-state team by freshman Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood), senior Mary Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), junior Jenny Ratzel (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East) and senior Liz Twentyman (Falls Church, Va./George Mason). Taylor placed fourth overall (26:06.24), followed by Christopher (7th/26:21.01), Ratzel (11th/26:59.48) and Twentyman (14th/27:10.79).
W&L returns to action on Saturday as it competes in the Winthrop Invitational.
