W&L ATHLETES CLAIM ODAC WEEKLY HONORS
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) and freshman Jackie Burns (Burke, Va./Woodward Academy) have been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Cross Country Athletes of the Week, while senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) has been named the ODAC Volleyball Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 9.
Johnson garnered the honor after winning the Virginia Division III Championship meet on Saturday afternoon at Eastern Mennonite University. Johnson crossed the tape in 27:32.31 to place first out of 67 runners at the meet. Last year's ODAC Runner of the Year, Johnson earned All-State honors with his place at the championships.
Burns was named the female runner of the week after winning the women's race at the Virginia Division III Championships with a time of 24:49.98. With her first place finish out of 73 runners, Burns also garnered All-State accolades.
Gladysz was named the ODAC Volleyball Player of the Week after helping the Generals to a 5-0 week. She totaled 202 assists for the week to move her career total to an ODAC career record 4,558 assists. For the week, Gladysz averaged 12.63 assists, 2.69 digs, 1.18 kills, 0.6 blocks and 0.5 aces per game. She notched 50 of her assists on Tuesday as the Generals downed Randolph-Macon (3-1) to improve their ODAC unbeaten streak to 60 straight matches. A two-time Third Team All-American and the ODAC Player of the Year last season, Gladysz has tallied 688 assists, 167 digs, 57 kills, 35 blocks and 29 service aces this season for the 17-3 Generals.
The W&L cross country teams return to action on Saturday at the Winthrop Invitational. The Generals' volleyball team returns to the court on Tuesday as it hosts Lynchburg for a 6:30 pm contest.
