NUMEROUS W&L STUDENTS EARN SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARDS

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Mike Walsh has announced that 136 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed fall term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

Additionally, 14 of the students honored achieved grade-point averages of 4.0 or higher (an A+ is worth 4.330 at W&L). Among the students achieving 4.0 or higher GPA's were senior All-ODAC men's tennis player Charles Anderson (Brentwood, Tenn./Mongomery Bell), senior volleyball player Virginia Baird (Houston, Texas/Lamar), senior women's lacrosse player Margaret Batten (Grosse Point Farm, Mich./Grosse Point South), sophomore women's soccer player Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass), freshman women's tennis player Tori Christmas (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), senior All-ODAC rider Katie Goodrich (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central), sophomore cross country and track athlete Alex Gould (Rocky Mount, N.C./Rocky Mount Academy), senior ODAC Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), freshman cross country and track athlete Anthony Ives (Charlotte, N.C./Harding Univ. School), senior ODAC Runner of the Year and Academic All-America cross country runner Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County), sophomore men's tennis player Tim Ross (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga), freshman cross country and track athlete Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood), senior cross country and track athlete Liz Twentyman (Falls Church, Va./George Mason), and freshman cross country and track athlete Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield School).

Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards included senior All-BMC swimmer Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg), sophomore All-BMC swimmer Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro), sophomore All-ODAC swimmers Jess Cobb (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and Amy Roberson (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches), junior All-ODAC women's tennis player Katie Kingsbury (Jenkintown, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian), junior All-ODAC and All-Region baseball player David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton), senior All-ODAC and All-State football player Liam Murray (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta), senior All-ODAC and All-Region women's soccer player Heather Rogers (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett), senior All-ODAC and All-Region women's lacrosse player Rachel Wallick (Phoenix, Md./Notre Dame Prep), freshman All-ODAC cross country runner Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) and senior All-ODAC and All-Region women's soccer player Gina Von Sternberg (Houston, Texas/Episcopal).

Twenty-one of W&L's 23 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the women's tennis team with a 3.486. The highest men's team GPA was the men's cross country team with a 3.484 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 2.953.

W&L had an outstanding fall season on the playing fields as well. W&L's nine fall sports teams combined for a record of 76-23-5 (.755) with volleyball, field hockey, men's cross country and women's cross country all winning ODAC Championships.
