BALTIMORE, Md. -- Four members of the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team have been named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III All-America team which was announced on Monday afternoon.
Seniors Lawson Grumbine (Owings Mills, Md./Gilman) and Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) were named to the second team, while senior goalie Ansel Sanders (White Stone, Va./Woodberry Forest) was named to the third team and junior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) was tabbed to the honorable mention squad.
A defenseman, Grumbine earned All-America honors for the first time in his career after being a two-time First Team All-ODAC selection. He spearheaded a W&L defense which ranked among the Top 10 in Division III, allowing just 6.78 goals per game. He scored two goals and collected 35 ground balls on the season.
Martin, a midfielder, earned second team laurels after garnering honorable mention recognition a season ago. A two-time First Team All-ODAC pick, he totaled 43 points on 34 goals and nine assists this season. For his career, Martin tallied 116 career points, 26th all-time at W&L.
Sanders posted third team honors after also recording honorable mention status in 2003. A three-time All-ODAC selection, he ranked among the national leaders in goals-against average (6.76) and claimed a .611 save percentage in 2004. He finishes his career ranked fifth all-time at W&L with 475 career saves and sixth all-time with a .605 save percentage.
Molinelli earned honorable mention accolades after claiming First Team All-ODAC honors this season. He led the team in scoring with 53 points on 18 goals and a team-high 35 assists, the sixth-highest season total in school history. He will enter his senior season with 127 career points coming on 51 goals and 76 assists. His 76 career assists already rank seventh all-time at W&L.
W&L's four selections to the All-America team marked the 15th straight year that the Generals have claimed at least an Honorable Mention All-American in a season.
Washington and Lee finished its 2004 season with a 14-4 overall record. The Generals claimed the ODAC regular season and tournament titles en route to advancing to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals. W&L finished the season ranked seventh in the final USILA Division III poll.
