W&L NAMES NEW ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT ASSISTANTS

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Mike Walsh has announced the hiring of five new assistant coaches, two new members of the athletic training staff, and a new assistant sports information director.

Joining the staff as assistant coaches are Adam Caine (Football), Mark Hudson (Men's Soccer), Brian Newberry (Football), Jason Rife (Men's Lacrosse), and Doug Stewart (Men's Basketball). Jeff Nadeau and Kelly Patton will serve with the training staff and Greg Murphy joins the sports information department as assistant SID.

Caine joins the football staff as running backs coach after serving as the offensive coordinator and boys and girls golf coach at John Carroll High School in Birmingham, Ala., since 1994. Prior to John Carroll, Caine was an offensive staff assistant at Samford University for two seasons. Caine holds two bachelor's degrees, one from Birmingham Southern (1993) and another from Alabama-Birmingham (1997).

Hudson is a 1999 graduate of Centre College where he was a team co-captain during the 1998 season. During his time at Centre, Hudson assisted with the Centre College soccer camps and the Central Kentucky Soccer Club, focusing on proper technique and general game skills. Following graduation, Hudson served as head coach for the Vail Valley Soccer Club for two seasons.

Newberry comes to W&L from Southern Arkansas where he was a graduate assistant football coach for the past two seasons. At SAU, Newberry was responsible for coaching the wide receivers, linebackers and defensive backs. A 1998 graduate of Baylor University with a bachelor of science, Newberry was a three-year letterwinner at defensive back for the Bears, helping lead them to the 1994 Alamo Bowl.

Rife comes to W&L from Whitter College where he served as an assistant coach from 1997 through this spring. During his time there, the Poets posted a 61-11 overall record and won the conference championship each season. Prior to Whittier, Rife assisted the boys lacrosse team at Amherst High School in Amherst, Mass., for one season. Rife has also coached at the Massachusetts Bay State Games (1996-97). A 1996 graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Rife was a two-year letterman for the Minutemen lacrosse team.

Stewart is a 1994 graduate of Brown University where he captained the basketball team as a senior. Following Brown, Stewart served as player-coach of the Washington Generals, playing the Globetrotters on every continent in the world. Stewart spent five and a half years with the organization both as a player-coach and organizational representative, handling everything from public relations to media coordination. Stewart has also co-directed his own basketball camp in the Philadelphia/Southern New Jersey area.

Nadeau becomes part of the W&L training staff after receiving a bachelor's degree in athletic training from Plymouth State University in May 2001. As an undergraduate, Nadeau served as the assistant athletic trainer at the Holderness School from Jan. 2001 until Mar. 2001, a non-medical assistant for the 104th Boston Marathon and served as a student assistant trainer for the Plymouth State men's soccer, women's basketball and women's tennis teams.

Patton is a 2001 graduate of Bridgewater College where she earned a bachelor's degree in allied health science with a minor in athletic training and business. Patton served as a student assistant trainer at BC for three years and was the senior trainer in charge of the men's basketball team. Patton also completed an internship with the Rockingham Memorial Hospital Rehab Services Department from Jan. 2001 until May 2001.

Murphy is a 2001 graduate of John Carroll University where he assisted the sports information department for four years. While at JCU, Murphy also served as sports editor of the school newspaper and play-by-play announcer for the student radio station. Murphy also completed an internship with the Cleveland Indians Media Relations Department during the spring and summer of 2001. Murphy earned a bachelor's degree in communications from John Carroll.
