PAUL WALLACE NAMED ODAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR
SALEM, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team placed
six players on the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference team in
voting by the league's coaches.
Senior sweeper Paul Wallace (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) was a
first team selection for the third time in his career and garnered
player of the year honors. Wallace is the first General to earn
player of the year honors since defender Mikel Parker won the award
following the 1998 season.
Wallace was joined on the first team by junior forward Brad Murphy
(Matoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy). Sophomore
midfielders Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) and
Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) and junior goalkeeper Tim
Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) were all named to the
second team. Senior defender Rick Schnatz (Darnestown, Md./Quince
Orchard) was an honorable mention pick.
Wallace earned the player of the year award after anchoring a
General defense which allowed an average of just 1.1 goals per
game. Wallace, who started all 17 games this season, tallied six
points on two goals and two assists. He scored the lone goal in a
1-0 victory over Hampden-Sydney in the ODAC semifinals.
Murphy, one of the most dangerous forwards in the ODAC, notched 15
points on six goals and three assists this season.
Stoehr makes his first apperance on the All-ODAC squad after
leading the Generals with nine goals and 19 points. Miller was
named to the second team for the second consecutive season after he
produced 13 points on four goals and five assists. Foley, a first
team selection last season, compiled a record of 8-3-1 this season,
including four shutouts. He made 47 saves and recorded a save
percentage of .810.
Schnatz helped spearhead the General defense which allowed just
over one goal per game. He also chipped in on the offensive end
with one assist.
W&L finished the season with an overall record of 12-4-1 and
won the ODAC regular season championship with an 8-1 conference
record. The Generals saw their season come to an end on Saturday as
they were defeated by Roanoke, 3-2, in the ODAC Championship.
