W&L ELEVATES FIELD HOCKEY TO VARSITY STATUS

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee athletic director Mike Walsh has announced the addition of field hockey as a varsity sport at Washington and Lee for the 2001 season. The move was approved by the University's Athletic Council and brings W&L's total sports offering to 23 sports, 12 for men and 11 for women.

The move was made possible because of the efforts of the women's athletes participating in the sport and Laurie Stagnitta, who coached the team during the transitionary phase.

W&L competed under developmental varsity status this fall, posting a 4-8 record against varsity competition. The team will play a full Old Dominion Athletic Conference schedule in 2001.

"The elevation of the sport coincides with the completion of our new, lighted artificial turf field where the team will participate," said Athletic Director Mike Walsh. "We feel that our program will compete in a facility second to none at the Division III level."

A national search for a full-time coach will begin immediately. The coach will also assist with women's lacrosse.
