NINETY-FIVE W&L STUDENTS EARN SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARDS

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Mike Walsh has announced that 95 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

Additionally, 11 of the students honored achieved grade point averages of 4.0 or higher (an A+ is worth 4.330 at W&L). Among the students achieving 4.0 or higher GPA's were senior All-ODAC football player Christian Batcheller (Stuart, Va./Patrick County), senior men's swimming captain James Browne (Ontario, Canada/University of Toronto), sophomore volleyball player Sara Heusel (Novi, Mich./Novi), junior women's lacrosse player Christina Julian (Danville, Va./George Washington), senior men's soccer player Jason Miller (Boone, N.C./Watauga), senior men's track captain Jason Nichols (Austin, Texas/Westlake), junior women's soccer and track athlete Liz Olson (Brookfield, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee), junior All-ODAC cross country runner Jessica Parrillo (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central), junior women's lacrosse player Jennifer Strawbridge (Houston, Texas/Westfield), freshman women's basketball player Liz Townsend (Farmville, Va./Prince Edward), and senior football manager Bob Walker (Memphis, Tenn.).

Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards included sophomore All-ODAC football player Jeff Bahl (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day), junior All-ODAC and All-State football player Will Baker (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), senior All-ODAC cross country runner Ashley Davis (Houston, Texas/Mirabeau B. Lamar), junior All-ODAC football player Colin Fitzgibbons (Dallas, Texas/Hillcrest), senior All-ODAC baseball player David Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy), junior All-American swimmer Colin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island), senior All-ODAC women's swimmer Lezael Haynes (St. Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago/St. Augustine Girls), junior preseason All-America men's lacrosse player Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola), sophomore All-ODAC men's cross country runner Ken Jackman (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo), senior All-ODAC football player J.T. Malatesta (Washington, D.C./Landon), junior All-ODAC women's cross country and track runner Kathleen Moroney (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays), sophomore All-ODAC men's cross country runner Rob Naftel (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), junior All-ODAC men's lacrosse player Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall), freshman All-ODAC women's tennis player Erika Proko (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day), freshman All-ODAC football player Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights), sophomore All-ODAC men's tennis player Zach Vuncannon (Asheboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School), and freshman All-ODAC women's tennis player Brandi Jane Wedgeworth (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Christian Academy).

Fourteen of W&L's 22 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the women's cross country team with a 3.289. The highest men's team GPA was men's swimming with a 3.165 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 2.597.

The women's teams combined for a 3.189 GPA, while the men's teams combined to post a 2.934 GPA.
