Kevin Weaver ’87 was a tremendous two-sport athlete for the Generals, starring in both football and track & field.
Weaver joined the track & field team as a sophomore and earned three varsity letters in helping the Generals to a trio of ODAC indoor titles and one ODAC outdoor championship. He competed on five conference championship relay teams, earning All-ODAC honors with four indoor relay teams and one outdoor relay squad.
On the football field, Weaver earned four letters as a running back, serving as one of the team captains for his senior campaign. He contributed to the team immediately, totaling 546 rushing yards and five touchdowns while averaging nearly five yards per carry over his first two seasons. In just his fourth career game, Weaver returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in a 44-7 rout of Maryville, the longest kickoff return in school history.
Weaver’s junior season on the gridiron was among the best-ever by a W&L running back. He was named the ODAC Player of the Year and received First Team All-ODAC and First Team All-State laurels after rushing 215 times for 1,161 yards and 16 touchdowns and catching nine passes for 84 yards and another score in leading the Generals to the 1985 ODAC Championship. His 13.8 points per game led the nation, while his 145.1 rushing yards per game ranked fourth nationally. Additionally, Weaver’s 110 points, 17 touchdowns and 16 rushing touchdowns all remained school records upon his induction to the Hall of Fame.
Weaver again led the Generals in rushing during his senior season, totaling 703 yards and six touchdowns on 194 carries. He also caught 11 passes for 102 yards en route to receiving Second Team All-ODAC honors.
The 1988 W&L Outstanding Senior Male Athlete Award winner, Weaver graduated as the program’s all-time leading rusher (2,437 yds.) and scorer (182 pts.).
