Bobby Matthews '89
Bobby Matthews was a tremendous tennis player for the Generals,
earning four letters and serving as a team captain during his
senior campaign.
Matthews was a three-time All-ODAC honoree and two-time winner of
the Memorial Tennis Cup as the team MVP. He garnered All-America
honors in both singles and doubles each of his final three seasons
and helped the team to four-straight ODAC titles and three trips to
the NCAA Division III Championship match.
As a freshman in 1986, Matthews won the ODAC Championship at No. 3
singles and No. 2 doubles, notching a 23-6 singles record and a
26-4 doubles mark. He helped guide the Generals to a runner-up
finish at the NCAA National Championship. Matthews’ sophomore
season produced a 27-6 singles record and a 29-3 doubles mark. He
earned All-America honors in both singles and doubles as the
Generals again finished as the NCAA Runner-up.
As a junior, Matthews earned ODAC Player of the Year accolades
after winning the ODAC title at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. He
went 23-14 in singles and 30-6 in doubles, helping the Generals to
their first-ever National Championship. Matthews teamed with John
Morris ’90 his senior year to win the NCAA Doubles
Championship. He won the ODAC title at No. 2 singles and No. 1
doubles and finished the season with a 23-7 singles record and a
28-6 doubles mark.
Matthews completed his career with a 96-33 singles record and a
113-19 doubles record.
