W&L Claims the 2013 ODAC Overall Sports Champion Cup

FOREST, Va. — For the 11th-consecutive year, Washington and Lee University has claimed the Dan Wooldridge Overall Sports Champion Cup, as announced by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference on Friday. The Generals claimed both the Women’s Commissioner’s Cup and the Men’s Commissioner’s Cup on their way to the overall title.

The cup, sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance, is presented to the school that exhibits the best all-around athletic program in the conference. Points for the Commissioner's Cups are based on regular season standings in team sports and championship team finishes in individual sports. Each institution has a total number of possible points it can collect based on their individual sport sponsorship. The total number of points earned is then divided by the total number of possible points in order to come up with a ranking for each institution.

Washington and Lee collected 170.0 of a possible 225.0 points for a 0.756 rating to win its 17th cup. Bridgewater and Lynchburg were separated by just 0.002 in the rating system, with the Eagles picking up second (0.678) and the Hornets third (0.676). The Generals are the only school to ever sweep all three cup. They have done it eight times, with the last coming in 2007-08.

W&L completed a wire-to-wire victory in the women's cup standings, finishing with a rating of 0.750. The Generals have won 10 straight women's cups and 13 overall. Roanoke placed second with a 0.708 mark. Randolph-Macon finished third by the narrowest of margins, registering a 0.707 rating.

The Generals were second to Lynchburg in the men's cup rankings following winter season, but strong showings in several sports, including the conference tennis title, helped push W&L to a 0.762 rating. W&L has captured the men's cup 14 times, with this year's honor its first since 2007-08. LC placed second with a 0.688 mark and BC's 0.663 posting ranked third in the final standings.

The Blue and White has compiled a 190-122-4 (.608) overall record during the 2012-13 school year thus far. The Generals took home ODAC Championships in women’s swimming, women’s lacrosse, football, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, women’s cross country and volleyball.
