Numerous W&L Students Earn Scholar-Athlete Awards

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 172 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

Additionally, 25 of the students honored achieved grade-point averages of 4.0 or higher (an A+ is worth 4.330 at W&L), a record number. Among the students achieving a 4.0 or higher GPA's were senior All-ODAC cross country and track & field athlete Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Episcopal), junior All-ODAC track & field athlete Billy Billington (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy), junior swimmer Katie Boiles (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches), first-year wrestler Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), sophomore soccer player David Coriell (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon), junior rider Emily Coyle (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside), senior field hockey player Melissa Dolan (Centennial, Colo./Kent Denver), sophomore soccer player Will Dorrance (Hershey, Pa./Hershey), sophomore soccer player Taylor Garrett (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), senior All-ODAC field hockey player Liz Garson (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), sophomore cross country and track & field athlete Rob George (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South), sophomore tennis player Will Hall (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth), senior rider Catherine Hook (Jericho Center, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union), senior cross country and track & field athlete Anthony Ives (Charlotte, N.C./Harding University School), first-year track & field athlete Kelli Jarrell (Dry Creek, W. Va./Liberty), sophomore All-ODAC football player Greg Kurkis (Roswell, Ga./Westminster), sophomore All-ODAC and All-Region field hockey and lacrosse player Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr), senior All-ODAC football player Tommy Matteo (Worcester, Pa./Germantown Academy), first-year All-ODAC rider Tamara Morse (Bristow, Va./Brentsville), sophomore field hockey player Jennie Norcini (Wayne, Pa./Episcopal Academy), senior All-ODAC and All-Region cross country and track & field athlete Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood), sophomore football player Scott Thomas (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia), senior All-ODAC and All-Region cross country and track & field athlete Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield), junior wrestler Russ Weems (Greenville, S.C./St. Joseph's Catholic) and senior track & field athlete Ben Wilson (Commerce, Ga./Commerce).

Twenty-one of W&L's 23 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the women's cross country team with a 3.684. The highest men's team GPA was the cross country team with a 3.544 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 2.888.
