NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) recently released its 2008 All-Academic Cross Country Teams and the Washington and Lee women's squad was honored along with several individuals.
The association recognized 157 Division III women's programs for compiling a team score at the NCAA Regional Meet and achieving a minimum 3.10 team cumulative grade-point average (GPA).
Additionally, the Generals had five athletes honored on the women's individual academic team. To be eligible for the individual award, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average and finish in the top 25 percent of the field at their respective NCAA regional meet. Seniors Jess Shaw (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park), Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) and Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield School), junior Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) and sophomore Christine Balistreri (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead) were all named to the 221-member Division III women's team.
Shaw, Taylor and Webb all earned First Team All-ODAC and All-South/Southeast Region honors in 2008, while Balistreri and Telfeyan were Second Team All-ODAC honorees. Telfeyan was also tabbed to the All-South/Southeast Region squad. Shaw won the ODAC Championship en route to being named the ODAC Runner of the Year, while Taylor was tabbed the ODAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the third-straight season. Both Webb and Shaw participated in the NCAA National Championship, finishing 115th and 156th, respectively. The Generals claimed their fifth-straight ODAC Championship en route to a third place finish at the NCAA South/Southeast Regionals.
