W&L Field Hockey Places Two Players on All-Region Squad

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced its Longstreth/NFHCA Division III All-Region teams on Monday and junior forward Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's) and sophomore midfielder Emily Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) were both named to the South Region's Second Team.

Armstrong, who was also a First Team All-ODAC selection, led the Generals in scoring this season with 37 points on 17 goals and three assists. Her 17 goals are the second-highest single-season total at W&L and her 37 points rank as the third-most prolific season in school history. Armstong will enter her senior campaign with 39 career goals and 93 career points and needs just four goals and 14 points to become W&L's all-time leader in both categories.

Mathews was also a first team all-conference selection this season. She started all 19 contests for the Generals and led the Blue and White with eight assists, while finishing third in scoring with 12 points. Her eight assists are tied for the third-most in a season at W&L.

The W&L field hockey team finished the 2008 season at 10-9 overall and 5-2 in league play. The Generals were ousted from postseason play following a 6-0 loss to Eastern Mennonite in the semifinal round of the ODAC Tournament.
