LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that Neil Cunningham has been promoted to assistant athletic director effective immediately. Cunningham will remain the school's women's soccer coach and director of physical education.
"I am pleased to offer this promotion to Neil," said Hathorn. "He is a top-notch educator and professional who, in addition to his coaching duties, has performed exceptionally in the role as our director of physical education. I am excited about working with Neil in this new capacity."
Cunningham has served as W&L's women's soccer coach since 2001, compiling a 116-25-16 (.789) overall record and twice earning ODAC and NSCAA South Region Coach of the Year honors. He has guided the Generals to a pair of ODAC titles and four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the NCAA "Elite Eight" in 2006. In addition to his soccer responsibilities, Cunningham was promoted to director of physical education in 2007.
"I am honored to be given the opportunity to serve W&L in this capacity," said Cunningham. "I am excited about this new challenge."
Cunningham earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the West London Institute of Higher Education and gained a master of science in sport leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003.
Cunningham and his wife, Susan, W&L's director of major gifts, reside in Lexington with their son, Daniel and daughter, Anna.
