SALEM, Va. -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) released its women's volleyball preseason coaches poll on Wednesday and Washington and Lee earned the top spot among the conference's 11 teams.
W&L, the five-time defending ODAC tournament champions, received eight first-place votes and were followed in the poll by Randolph-Macon, who received three first-place votes.
The Generals posted a 32-5 overall record and a perfect 10-0 mark in the ODAC last season. W&L ran its streak of consecutive wins against conference schools to 78 straight during the campaign and notched a school-record 21-match winning streak. The Generals advanced to their fifth straight NCAA Tournament before falling to Southwestern University in the opening round.
W&L returns three starters from last season's club, including senior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) and sophomore outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII). Edmonson earned First Team All-ODAC honors after setting a school record for digs in a season (511). Maurer posted ODAC Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-ODAC laurels after leading the conference with an average of 4.02 kills per game.
W&L opens the 2006 season by hosting the W&L Invitational on Sept. 8-9. The Generals begin the season against Southern Virginia on Fri., Sept. 8 at 4:00 pm.
