LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee junior wide receiver Jack Martin (Princeton, N.J./ Hun School) and sophomore running back Stuart Sitterson (Atlanta, Ga./ Westminster) have both been selected First Team Preseason All-America by Don Hansen's Football Gazette. Senior wide receiver Colton Ward (Charlotte N.C./Charlotte Country Day) earned Third Team honors.
In addition to this honor, Martin has been selected First Team Preseason All-America by both D3Football.com and Street & Smith’s as well as Second Team Preseason All-America by Lindy’s.
Martin, who played in all 10 games, caught 70 passes for 1,353 yards and 15 touchdowns during the 2005 season. He ranked third in Division III in receiving yards (135.3) and 19th in receptions per game (7.0). Martin's 15 receiving touchdowns were the highest season total in Washington and Lee history, while his 90 points rank third all-time for a season at W&L.
Martin was named VaSID First Team All-State, Roanoke Times First Team All-State, Second Team All-ODAC and also garnered Second Team All-South Region honors. He was the runner-up for the Dudley Award, presented to the Virginia College Division Player of the Year.
Sitterson adds this honor to a First Team Preseason All-America selection by D3Football.com and a Second Team Preseason All-America selection by Lindy’s.
Sitterson, who was cited as a kick returner, played in all 10 games during the 2005 season, totaling 1,185 yards and nine touchdowns. He returned 12 kickoffs for 408 yards and two touchdowns and also returned 31 punts for 383 yards. Sitterson ranked No. 1 in Division III in kickoff return average (34.0 ypr.) and 29th in Division III in punt return average (12.4 ypr.). He also totaled 296 yards and six touchdowns on 73 carries as a running back and caught 15 passes for 98 yards.
Sitterson was named to the D3Football.com First Team All-America squad as a return specialist and received First Team All-State accolades by the Virginia SID Association and Roanoke Times. He was also named the 2005-06 W&L Outstanding Freshman Male Athlete of the Year.
Ward, who was cited as an all-purpose back, played in all 10 games last season. He recorded season-totals of 307 rushing yards, 554 receiving yards and 400 yards on kickoff returns for an average of 126.1 all-purpose yards per game. Ward set school records for kickoff return average for a season (36.4 ypr) and career (26.5 ypr) and kickoff return touchdowns (3).
Ward was named VaSID Second Team All-State and earned Second Team All-ODAC honors for the 2005 season.
Washington and Lee finished the 2005 season with a 7-3 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Generals posted their highest win total in 20 years and tied for second in the ODAC standings. Washington and Lee returns seven starters on offense and five on defense for the 2006 campaign.
