W&L WRESTLING RECEIVES ACADEMIC ACCOLADES
MANHEIM, Pa. -- The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) recently announced its 2007 Scholar All-America Team and the Washington and Lee wrestling team was one of 21 Division III squads honored. Additionally, juniors Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers), Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) and David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) were honored as an NWCA Scholar All-Americans.
The Generals, who received the team award honor for the third-straight year, were ranked fourth out of the 21 Division III teams with a 3.379 team grade-point-average (GPA).
Individually, to be eligible for Scholar All-America status, an athlete must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher on a scale of 4.0, for the previous full academic year.
Boniello, a physics and engineering major, led W&L in wins (20-8) and was the runner-up at 165 pounds at the Centennial Conference Championships. A business management major, Adamson recorded a 15-12 overall mark at 197 pounds, while Shubick (accounting) tallied an 18-10 overall record and a team-best 64 takedowns.
W&L concluded the 2006-07 season with a 8-3 overall record, while posting the most overall wins since 1986-87 and the most-ever conference wins (5-2). The Generals also finished fifth out of eighth teams at the Centennial Conference Championships.
