DELAWARE, Ohio -- Five Washington and Lee soccer players were selected to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District III Women's and Men's Soccer teams, which were recently announced.
On the women's team, junior midfielder Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) earned first team honors, while sophomore midfielder Kate Corr (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and sophomore forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) were both named to the second team.
Senior defender Scot Pittman (Waxhaw, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and senior midfielder Rhett McCraw (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) were tabbed to the first team on the men's side.
Caulkins, a economics and mathematics double major, has played in all 19 of the Generals' contests this season and ranks third on the squad in points with 24 (9g, 6a). A neuroscience major, Corr has also seen action in all of W&L's games this season and has two goals and three assists. Van Devender leads the Blue and White in points with a school-record tying 51 (20g, 11a) and is an undeclared major.
A biology major, Pittman anchors the W&L backfield that allows a mere 0.49 goals-per-game. McCraw, who is majoring in physics and engineering, has seen action in all 16 of the Generals' matches this season and has three goals and one assist.
With their first-team selections, Caulkins, Pittman and McCraw will now go on to the national ballot where they could earn Academic All-America honors.
The criteria for the CoSIDA Academic All-District program states that a player must be of sophomore academic standing, be a starter or important reserve, and claim a GPA of at least a 3.20 on a 4.0 scale. Washington and Lee is a member of District III, which includes players from small colleges in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
